About Miskatonic

Established by surviving Puritan clergymen and witch hunters in 1692, Miskatonic University was founded with a commitment to academic excellence, intellectual integrity, and public service outside the realms of pseudoscience. By leveraging a legacy of leadership in matters both scholarly and supernatural, we seek to inspire our students to pursue their professions with the same level of inquisitive and investigative zeal which illuminated and vexed our founders. We pride ourselves on our distinguished faculty (both living and undead), critically acclaimed curriculum, and robust interdisciplinary research programs, as well as the healthy fear of the unknown that our university continually instills in our students, alumni, and community.

The University Seal

Designed in the late 17th century, the seal of Miskatonic University is present on all official school documents. The telescope symbolizes the cosmos, which we look to with both inspiration and fear. The flame signifies the zeal which ignited our founders, while the five stars represent Miskatonic’s five schools. New England's strong maritime tradition is conveyed by the anchor. Although the octopus motif has long been associated with Miskatonic, its meaning remains a mystery to even the most pedantic of heraldic scholars. Some speculate that the cephalopod, with its many arms, represents the variety of academic endeavors which our students pursue. Others suggest that it evokes the mythical Kraken which, according to legend, was once spotted near Arkham's coast in the 1680s.
